Greetings BROADOUS Family:

I am blessed to have been born into this GOD fearing Broadous Family whose ancestors, Rev. Zachrah, Sr. and Mattie Thomas Broadous, laid a spiritual foundation upon which we live today. It was/is an awesome honor to have served as National President and now serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors for The Broadous Family Reunion.

The family moved into the Twenty First Century with its great Broadous traditions, all the while, keeping its commitment to the edict from the Rev. Zachrah Broadous, Sr. of “Children, whatever you do, always stay in touch with one another” and following Mrs. Mattie that we not forget the family prayer.

What kind of love inspired a husband and wife to ensure that long after they are gone from this earth but not from our hearts, their offspring would continue in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ, continue to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, and continue to carry on with family traditions, whilst adding new traditions consistent with the foundation established by Rev. Zachrah, Sr. and Mrs. Mattie?

Agape’ Love and Love for Family that inspired Rev. Zachrah, Sr. and Mattie. Clearly, that same Agape’ Love and that same Love for Family have sustained the Broadous Family through generations, even into the Twenty First Century.

The Broadous Family, strongly knitted together, will always pay tribute to Rev. Zachrah, Sr. and Mrs. Mattie who laid a strong foundation based on our Lord Jesus Christ. Today and evermore, we stand firm on that foundation as did the original brothers and sisters. “Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.”

The Broadous Family Web Site is intended to use modern technology as a tool to stay in touch with one another as we share information relevant to our family. May God bless us all!

In CHRISTs Love and Broadous Love

Chairman of the Board

Spotlight on James Toliver

James Toliver is the great-great grandson of Mattie Bell Broadous Flake, great grandson of Opal Flake Lee, grandson of Jo Ann Roland Harris, and son of Renée Harris Toliver.

James will graduate this May from Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving, Texas, where he was a member of the high school cross-country and track teams before being sidelined by leg and knee injuries. He is a National Merit Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, and has made the honor roll every semester. His extracurricular activities include mock trial, math club, chess club, diversity club, quiz bowl and robotics. He has also volunteered at his twin brother Jared’s autism therapy center and as a tutor at his own school

In his spare time, he studies and plays chess. He competes often and is highly-ranked by the United States Chess Federation, despite taking up the game relatively late. James was recently featured in a commercial and video short in the Arvest Bank “Ask-the-Expert” series.

James was blessed to have been accepted to a number of great colleges, including University of Chicago, Rice University, University of Texas at Austin, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. After narrowing his choices to the two Cambridge schools, MIT and Harvard, James visited over three consecutive long weekends in April. In the end, Harvard made a very generous scholarship offer just before the decision deadline. James, always the pragmatist, decided he will attend Harvard University this fall and study physics.

The decision was not an easy one though, as James had already formed relationships with several MIT “Prefrosh” and felt the quirkiness of the campus would be a very good fit. Recently, he has started to form online relationships with a number of future Harvard classmates too. The silver lining is that the schools are only two miles from each other and allow cross-registration. So, James can also take classes at MIT while enrolled at Harvard, if he chooses. And there is almost always the opportunity for a chess game in Harvard Square
